Infographics: A Simplistic Way To Relay Information
Out of all the infographics provided I found “The World as 100 People” to be the most compelling. I think that dividing the world into categories and simplifying the population to 100 people makes the information easy to absorb. The 100 people can be easily related to 100% and is an effective way to help understand the data. The circle works well because the circle could represent the globe and its easier to look at the collection of information when it’s in a neat arrangement rather than just listed. Also, the colors make it easy to distinguish one group from another.
The second infographic I found is from Information Is Beautiful and is called “Chicks Rule?”. I found the information this infographic is displaying to be relative and interesting. This class has a social media aspect to it and our generation seems to revolve around social media as well. Seeing which sites are predominately male and which are predominately female was intriguing to me. I think this infographic has certain aspects that work really well and others that seem to be a little more confusing. I like the pink and blue colors for female and male and the use of the boy and girl symbols/pictures. The percentage of that sex’s usage of the site was also helpful. I think the million more monthly female or male visitors on the right is confusing to understand and would have been okay to leave out. Another thing that would have worked well would have been if the male and female users were in the same line so you could see the total number of users of the site, not just which sex visits more often. The predominate sex’s corresponding percent could be reflective of the sex depending on if it is in blue or pink.
I also found this infographic on BuzzFeed. I thought it was interesting because it doesn’t display data but rather a process. It goes to show that infographics can be an effective way of communicating information in a wide variety of areas.
