Update: Child Obesity Research
Due to the fact that child obesity rates have doubled in the past three decades, there are many resources regarding information on the topic. Statistics, figures, and facts are not hard to find at all. What is hard to find though, are recent stories related to child obesity. It isn’t hard to figure out why child obesity is bad. Everyone knows the negatives health effects that come along with it. However, it would be helpful to have an example from something in the news that reports how child obesity effected a specific child.
Another problem I’ve run into is defining child obesity. Different sites/organizations have various ideas for what makes a child obese versus non obese. Some say it is having twenty percent body fat, while others say only a doctor can determine it by measuring height and weight and then cross referencing those numbers with a body mass index chart. Age of the child is also an issue. It is not hard to look at someone and determine if they are unhealthy based on their weight. Because of this, having an exact dividing line is not completely necessary for the purposes of my research. However, since child obesity is my public issue, it would be nice to be able to provide a concrete definition for the word.
I really like your topic of childhood obesity. It’s hard not to notice the increasing need to make this a priority. I definitely agree that defining childhood obesity is a challenge. I think a big barrier to the obesity issue is how children to efficiently engage children so that they are interested and proactive in making healthy lifestyle choices.
I think its a multifaceted approach that needs to motivate children to take control.Obviously, that is so much easier said than done. An area of research that could potentially be interesting in regards to this topic is school lunch programs. I know that the media has discussed various initiatives to revamp school lunches and make them healthier. However, I think it is a difficult, slightly controversial, and expensive issue. I would be curious to see the effectiveness of school districts that have attempted the healthy school lunch.
