Beating Homelessness
While browsing the collection of audio logs on storycorps.com, one in particular caught my eye with the title “I can’t even begin to tell you the misery of rain.” In this story, George Hill recaps his life of being homeless on the streets. He speaks about how miserable it was, watching all the “normal” people go about their lives, and how miserable it was every time it rained or was cold. Then one day it all changed when another homeless man that Hill described as, “so dirty it was just awful,” approached him, reached into his pocket, and gave Hill a dollar in change and said, “Here, man, I feel sorry for you!” It was at that moment that Hill decided he needed something to change, and went to get help. Using that dollar, he caught the bus and went to the psych unit in the hospital. He is no longer homeless, and is living a successful life.
What really appealed to me about this story was when Hill said he doesn’t have any regrets about what happened because of how grateful he became after going through homelessness. It shows how we really need to appreciate what we have. What really kept me listening through the whole story was the concrete details and vivid descriptions provided by Hill. His adjectives used to describe the other homeless man painted a very vivid picture for the story. Hill did a very good job immersing the listener into what it is like to be homeless. He also keeps it very short and to the point. There were no unnecessary excess details or long dragged out sentences. It has an informal tone, but is still able to show sophistication by not getting careless. Overall, I think that this is a great and inspirational story that everyone should listen to.

This story was very short and too the point which was good. I felt very inspired by this story. However if felt the author who put this audio piece together could of done a better job. There were no extra audio cues or sounds that supported the dialouge. I did not feel like the audio clip put me in a specific time of place. And i think the interview should of been longer with more detail.
