14-year-old Blind Triplets: Growing Up
This is a very interesting audio composition right off the bat, because the title (14-year-old triplets Leo, Nick, and Steven Argel tell Ollie Cantos about growing up) accompanied with the picture of three blind boys.makes you want to learn more. The majority of the sound clip was the three boys talking to their adopted mentor about growing up. This was a very appealing story to me because I wanted to learn how people blindness affects these individuals’ daily lives.
The post begins with a man (Ollie Cantos) speaking about his experience with blindness. He spoke about how he was teased by other people and how his disability made it hard for him to experience life. He then addresses the three boys and asks them how blindness has affected them. They present a similar story, saying how hard it was to make friends and how one of the boys didn’t want to continue living. The mood was very sad and depressing, and made the listener feel sympathy for these boys.
Despite the sad and depressing intro, the story began to lighten up as they began to explain how they met Ollie. Because Ollie was older, he was able to teach them new things to better function in society. They also included a story where one of the boys called Ollie “dad”. You can hear the emotions in their voice when they talk about this, and this makes for an even more attention-holding audio story. You can tell that these triplets and Ollie have a genuine, special bond that they were willing to share in this audio clip.
Because you can’t see them on a video screen, you have to rely on their voices to understand what’s happening. That is why this was so captivating for me. We are experiencing this story the same way a blind person would; by listening.
The last line of the interview was said by Ollie; “It is impossible to describe how great it feels to be your dad”. And then ends with a happy, upbeat song. What started as a sad and almost depressing story turned into a more cheerful, optimistic outlook on their situation.
