Great end to the Preseason, or just great to end the preseason?

It is no secret that Pittsburghers love the Steelers, but after reading the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, it is clear that the reporters and fans are unhappy with the preseason performance by their beloved football team.

Ron Cook reported that the best thing about Thursday night’s game was that it marked the end of the preseason.  He had no positive comments about the teams offense, and very few about the teams defense. His few highlights include the efforts of fan favorite Brett Keisel, outside line backer Jarvis Jones, and the massive Daniel McCullers. He did not have many other uplifting comments to say about the game itself, other than the fact that all of the teams major players made it out without any serious injuries.

The fans also seem to disapprove of the final football game of August. Nearly 22,000 seats were left empty at the game against the Panthers. Ron Cook states that these fans wisely chose to stay away from the game despite paying for their tickets. Twitter was full of unhappy tweets from fans as well. Most fans were glad for the Hines Field experience, but were ultimately disappointed by the team’s actual performance on the field.

Cook very much supports the idea of cutting down the exhibition games to two instead of four. This would begin an eighteen game regular season and only half the amount of painful preseason games. Ed Bouchette, another Pittsburgh Post Gazette reporter, agrees with this idea. He claims Thursday Night’s “dance of scrubs” shows why the NFL commissioner is trying to reduce the number of preseason games in half. This could be a perfect solution to the problem at hand. Many people are ready to see the end of perhaps too long NFL preseason.
