Warning: Smoking is Addictive

This image strongly articulates the dangers of smoking. The audience of this advertisement is smokers. The artist satirically warns them of the danger of smoking by commenting on its addictiveness, when the picture is portraying much worse danger. The text is short and to the point so it instantly catches the reader’s eye. The artist uses pathos in the image because when you look at the image you cringe at gaping hole in the smoker’s throat. The picture also has a type of logos because it is illogical for someone to do something that would cause so much harm to their bodies. You could also say the image questions the ethics of the smoking industry, whether or not it is right to sell something that will hurt the consumer.

From a design standpoint, the creator did an excellent job of keeping this visual argument simple yet powerful. The creator emphasized the “Warning” by using a bold font- the same font that you would often see on the back of a cigarette box. Also, juxtaposing the satirical text with the distressing image makes the argument even stronger.

I thought the visual argument was effective in bringing attention to the serious harm that smoking can do. I hope that messages like this will persuade smokers to quit before more harm is done to their bodies.
