Update on Litter in Pittsburgh
Since my goal is to promote awareness for the Pitt Panthers Pummel Polluters (the name is a work in progress), I decided to further research how local websites promoted themselves to reach the residents of Pittsburgh. Because my I first looked into donttrashmyturf.org, which came up when I googled “litter in Pittsburgh”. On the website, there are links to the biographies of those who run the organization. Each of them has their mission statement and encourage others to get involved. The website contains numerous links to other organizations in Pittsburgh, such as “Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful” and the “Clean Pittsburgh Commission”. I like the integration of different websites because it provides users with an even more effective tool to discover other groups with a similar mission. The gallery contains photos and videos like this, where residents are getting involved or promoting anti-litter. The “Get involved” section allows you to get involved with “don’t trash my turf” twitter campaign and show your support. To take it a step further, programs are available that allow you to go directly to the streets and help clean up. The home screen also has a direct link to a hotline where you can call and report littering within the city. Don’t Trash my Turf will then contact them and remind them that littering is not okay or welcome in Pittsburgh. The thing that really made the website work for me was the integration of social media, images, and the overall message that it promoted. If I were to implement a website, I would use a similar format that the “don’t trash my turf” organization used.
