Update: Education in Latin America

Research for my public issue, education in Latin America, has progressed very well, especially after today. I found a substantive, but still concise, report from the Task Force on Education Reform in Central America outlining the problems with Latin American education. They also lay out their suggestions for the region to improve its education system. The majority of analytics I have had up to this point have been lengthy reports on the status of the region by advocacy or informative groups, and while helpful, none of them have been as clear as the one I discovered today. I believe I still need to find more primary sources, such as interviews with people from the region. Any public interview with someone of importance in the Latin American education system will be extremely beneficial to my project.

One challenge I have come across is the time period of data. The overwhelming majority of research I have read through is from the early to mid 2000s. While this data is definitely still relevant and helpful, I need to find research from, the past five years, because things change in the Central American region frequently. For example, the recent drug war that took over Mexico a couple of years ago may have had a huge effect on the Mexico’s education system. Drug wars cost money, and it is very likely money was taken from the education system to fund the war. This is just one of many examples.
