NORML: The Public’s Voice for Marijuana Law Reform
If you’ve been paying attention to the news over the past couple years, you will probably have heard about all the new developments when it comes to legalizing marijuana. A drug once categorized as “having no medical benefit” and believed to be harmful is now being seen in a new light.
NORML is an organization that was founded to spread awareness of the benefits of legalizing marijuana. NORML states that they are the voice of the tens of thousands of individuals who smoke marijuana responsibly. Upon examination of the website, it is apparent that the main audience of the information compiled on the website is the national media as well as individuals.
The authors of the website use pathos to appeal to those who are in favor of marijuana legalization. While all the information on the site is factual, the information is very one sided and may deter people who aren’t in favor of legalization.
Logos is used by compiling recent medical studies done by accredited doctors and researchers with results that point toward the legalization of marijuana. There are also articles from members of congress and lawyers.
NORML demonstrates its ethos by listing full biographies for all the members of its board of directors. The board of directors is made up of numerous Ph.D.’s and M.D.’s. They have received degrees from many different universities across the country.
NORML does a good job at spreading its information through new digital pathways. NORML manages its own twitter account that can be followed by any twitter user. It posts similar information and links to articles promoting the legalization of marijuana. There is also a blog that is managed by members of NORML and can be found on the NORML website.
