Equality: Are We There Yet?

Equality: Are We There Yet?

While it may seem like equality is an issue if the past, there are still many obstacles for our society to overcome. And while most would assume that this refers to women, immigrants, or people of color, they are not fully correct. The fact of the matter is that yes, these groups are highly targeted, but anyone can be taken advantage of or denied rights they inherently deserve.

The American Civil Liberties Union is a site dedicated to not only gender equality, but also equality in general, regardless of race, color, religion, and so forth. The audience of this site can be anyone, although some of the content is specifically about women. Regardless of that stipulation, the site encourages everyone to “stir into action” through “making a difference,” either by donating or joining the fight. They encourage people to “take action” by “acting now” and signing up for their newsletter in order to become involved and active.

This site uses some pathos with the stories they tell, playing on the audience’s emotions through heartbreaking tragedies of loss and fear. Some of these stories are not even about women specifically, but instead about individuals who are wrongly accused and then attacked because of it. For example, one story talks about a SWAT team that forced their way into a home, knocking down a door and blowing a hole in a babies’ chest. This was all for suspicions about a fifty-dollar drug deal, which they later found absolutely no evidence of in the home. The point this organization is trying to make from this story is that SWAT teams should not be allowed to raid people’s homes like this unless they have concrete evidence, bringing into question the bigger issue of privacy safety.

The site also uses ethos, making itself credible through its goals and purpose. It discusses which rights everyone is guaranteed in this country, the history of the organization, and the leadership behind it. In the leadership section there is a whole biography about the President, Susan N. Herman, and all her credentials. Judging from Herman’s chair as Centennial Professor of Law at Brooklyn Law School, her various publications about constitutional and criminal procedure topics, and her appearance on shows such as NPR and NBC, The American Civil Liberties Union seems pretty credible.

Something else this website does well is navigability and organization. Everything is very easy to find, especially due to it being labeled with headings, subheadings, bolding, and spacing between paragraphs. Bowden and Scott also talk about strategies such as bolding important text, formatting text into numbered or bulleted lists, and using an active style. This website follows all of these rules quite well.
