Cognitive Surplus and College Alcoholism

I really enjoyed reading the first chapter of “Gin, Television, and Cognitive Surplus”, because it really applied to my public issue, College Alcoholism.  I never knew about the Gin phenomena that occurred in London in the 1720s, so it was really interesting to me.  Too much of any one thing is not good, not matter what it might be.  Having too much free time can be very dangerous to people; it can lead to bad habits, laziness, and inefficient time use.  Like the chapter had mentioned, too much alcohol is definitely a bad thing.  It can lead to several serious health effects, physical injuries, and even death.

Wikipedia is probably one of the most ingenious inventions ever.  It allows people to collaborate on writing educational documents to help many people learn on topics in a familiar, easy, and well organized way.  Despite its lack of legitimacy of authorship, I have never been a witness to falsified information on any Wikipedia sight I ever read.  For my topic I found several smaller pages on college alcoholism, but nothing very specific. Instead I chose to pick my Wikipedia sight to be alcohol in general.  The multiple Wikipedia pages I read highlighted on the issues mainly of binge drinking, something that I mostly focus on.  Binge drinking is the biggest problem in college because that’s where it occurs the most frequently.  Alcohol is abused by college students much more dramatically than adults, many studies and statistics show.  Such statistics are from sources like alcohol education organizations and the National Institute of Drug and Alcohol Abuse.

Indiego and Kick start are other great sites that allow for the finical backing of thousands of projects people start.  The most successful projects are those that are the most creative, by using good/funny descriptions of the project and well produced videos, people are more willing to back a project.  Another important part to an advertising campaign for such sights is the idea of the backer getting something in return for their donation and support.  I found a indiego page that was raising money for the creation of an alcoholics unanimous short film.  The project meet its goal, and was successful due to its amount of information provided and  the ability for the backer to get something in return for their contribution.
