Cognitive Surplus and ILoveCollege
I found the Cognitive Surplus article very interesting. Cognitive surplus is the extra time people have and the ways they spend it. In the 1720s London spent this extra time drinking lots and lots of gin. When television came out, people spent their time watching sitcoms and soap operas. Now, young people seem to be watching less TV then older generations. Instead, they are spending their time on sites like Youtube and Wikipedia.
I was surprised to find little information on urban public schools on Wikipedia. They did have a lengthy page on the Philadelphia Public School District where they discussed the history of the school district, the state takeover, and the budget. They also listed over 100 references which is very helpful. From the school district page, you can get to pages of other specific schools in the district, as well as pages about the city. When searching for the Philly School District, I also found another Philadelphia Public School District page, but it was in Philadelphia, Mississippi! I searched for “city schools,” “urban schools,” and “inner city schools,” but they did not have any pages for them. There was a lengthy page explaining what charter schools are and their history in the United States as well as other countries.
On both the indiegogo and kickstarter website, I didn’t find many fundraisers specific to urban public education. Either they were more specific like schools fundraising for specific clubs or people were trying to raise money to go to college. I really enjoyed the ILoveCollege fundraiser whose aim is to make clothing the inspire students to attend and graduate from college. By creating clothing with messages like “Get Smarter” or “Straight ‘A’ student” the creator hopes to make education “cool.” I like how the Kickstarter website sets up fundraising rewards on the right hand side of the page, so if you pledge $25 you’ll get a shirt and if you pledge $50 you’ll get a snapback hat and so on. I thought the creator laid out his ideas for ILoveCollege in a very appealing way and hopefully he will be able to get the funds to continue with his project!
