Public Education- understanding it’s entirety
Through my research on underfunded public schools in Philadelphia, I have had trouble understanding the entirety of my issue. Finding numbers about the budget and detailed information about government funding for public schools is difficult. The information I do find are very lengthy reports that contain lots of boring details which are hard to understand. The hardest part about picking a topic like this is fully understanding all the aspects that are involved-from everyday life in the school to state funding. I can’t say the government is underfunding the schools without first understanding the budget and how efficient the school system is with the money that budget and understanding the budget’s connection to state funding. Most newspapers report on the “juicy information” from the teachers’, parents’, and students’ points of view, but it is difficult to find interesting information about the government and school board’s side. I have found a lot of good information about the protests and issues within the schools, but little information regarding the actual numbers in the budget and school board policies being passed. While I feel that my topic is pretty narrow because I am focusing on Philadelphia, I did not realize all the entirety of the public education system. I feel details like these are essential to the blog because they provide the reader an understanding of the full issue.
Can you find some stats on the funding of Philly schools per student, versus some richer suburbs? That’s one way to indicate there’s a lack of investment in city schools. You might find some articles on how it’s actually more expensive to educate kids in tough situations because of the support systems they need.
