Hamilton VS Trump

So, I don’t know how aware you are about this but the internet was recently exploding with Hamilton and Pence tweets and comments.  I first saw this on Facebook while scrolling through my feed.  I saw the video (below) and applauded the Hamilton cast for speaking on the behalf of the theatre community.  For years now, the theatre community have been fighting for more fair castings and treatments across all cultures and sexualities, but that’s beside the point.

The video of the address by the Hamilton cast hit the social media and it went wild—to the point that the news stations where picking it up and talking about it.  On Fox News this morning (November 20) they were even talking about it and Pence’s reaction to the address.  As of yesterday, there was even a trending tweet of #NameAPenceMusical.  “People on Twitter are making up their own Pence-inspired musicals using the hashtag #NameAPenceMusical” (Julia Reinstein).  Even Trump himself has taken to social media to demand an apology from the cast.  In return, there have been people that retaliated with the fact that the president-elect is asking for an apology for freedom of speech.

Social media is a powerful place where everyone around the world is watching.  For the president-elect to post that is something that shows the world what kind of leader you will be.  Both Dixon, the man who plays Arron Burr and the person who addressed the speech to Pence, were very respectful of one another.  Supporters of Trump even went as far as asking to boycott Hamilton by trending #BoycottHamilton.  Unfortunately, they will have to wait for a couple months as the show is sold out until September 2017.

Everyone’s response to this video has been different but social media definitely takes it to another level.  Social media is a powerful place and news travel very fast.  In the modern age where everyone is glued to their technology, it’s a dangerous place to be.  I’m sorry I brought politics into this post but I think that there’ something to be said about how social media definitely played a part in this now Hamilton/Trump duel.
