Audacity Project: Music and Memory

For this project, I wanted to touch on something that my boyfriend and I both love: music. In our time together, we’ve seen Umphery’s McGee, Rusted Root, Marshmello and Big Gigantic play at various locations in and around Pittsburgh. I am always so interested in hearing what songs and bands people like and comparing it to my own taste. I also find it fascinating to hear about where their musical taste comes from and what musical memories they have. For instance, I love a sub-genre of electronic, alternative music called “chill wave,” which includes a lot of rhythmic ‘hippie’ sounds with high singing voices (see the artists Flume and Odesza for example). This makes me nearly a direct combination of my parents’ tastes in music, as my mom loves hippie bands like the Beatles and my dad is (hilariously enough) into high-voiced dance music. I have a lot of memories of jamming out to their various musical preferences, including at my sixth yoga/Beatles birthday party where my friends and I played “Pin the Tail on the Yellow Submarine” in floral leotards inside a yoga studio. I wanted to see how my experience of music compared to Joe’s experience—hence, the interview.
