Website Project: Frenchi’s Deli and Market

I chose Frenchi’s Deli and Market for my website project. It’s a popular place, but I’m sure there are people who have never heard of it. I encourage anyone who has not gone to go and give it a try.

Here is the link

And here is my cover letter:

Frenchi’s Deli

For my Tiny Corner of Pittsburgh, I chose a place located right here in Oakland, called Frenchi’s Deli and Market. It’s only a block from my house and I have been there many times. Every time I go I leave with a smile on my face, so I thought why not make my website project about him.

I chose to keep it simple with a home page, about page, and a news page. I didn’t want to overload these pages with words or pictures, I wanted to provide fairly concise descriptions on these pages with simple pictures to accompany these descriptions. I wanted to focus more on the design elements of the pages, and spent a lot of my time toying and tinkering with the background and text colors. Frenchi is from France, so I tried to use primarily the French colors of red, white, and blue. After some time, I decided to keep the front page with a clean look with a white background, a grey nav bar, and black text. It felt to me to be a subtler introduction to the website. The other two pages I decided to make pop a little more with background color and text with color as well. I included more photos in these pages as well, as I felt these pages were more appropriate for photos.

Another element I played a lot with was the nav bar. After learning on w3schools.com about nav bars, and the plethora of options available, I decided to use a horizontal nav bar across the top of the page. I like how it seemed to “break up” the title of the page and the subsequent text underneath it.

As for the pictures, they were all pictures the Frenchi himself owned, and one simple trip down to the deli and he was happy to let me use them for the website.
