My music library is populated by remixes. Slow ballads, fast-paced dance songs, wordless hymns. I think I have more remixes than actual originals. I’m not entirely sure what that says about me, but clearly I have an affinity for music that plays with composition and style, and draws a song away from its original foundation into a less genre-defined territory.
Cassie’s original song, Me & U is catchy enough on its own, in a classic, Destiny’s Child sort of way. But VILLAGE’s remix slows the song down and adds a sort of humming element that makes the music almost hypnotic. I feel a pull toward music like the Me & U remix that lacks conventional structure and which plays with the boundaries of tradition.
Maybe we could all use a little remixing.
