My name is Sydney Harper and I’m a senior Political Science and Communications double major from Silver Spring, MD (right outside D.C.). I really hate having to introduce myself as a senior because each time I say it, and each time I hear that dreaded word come out of my mouth, it becomes harder to lie to myself about the fact that this’ll all be over soon.
My interest in digital media and content creation was cultivated in high school through a journalism course sponsored by PBS Student Reporting Labs. Since then, I’ve been fascinated by the use of the media to set the conversation about what is news and what the public should be talking about; I’ve loved telling stories and using creative means to share important ideas. As the platforms we use to tell those stories change, I think digital media and a mastery of its principles is going to be important to students like us who want to enter the field. I also think we’re going to need more people who bring different perspectives to the media that is created so that everyone is represented in right and fair ways going forward.
If you want to hear some fun (and not going to lie, possibly weird) things about me, I can give you a few. My favorite foods are spinach artichoke dip and quiche lorraine. Tears have seriously been shed over a spinach dip that was just so good that it hurt. The show of the moment that has captured all of my love, attention and free time is The West Wing because I enjoy discussing politics and getting that (albeit fake) inside look into what the presidential administration might be like from day to day. I get my news from places like NPR, CBS News, Washington Post, New York Times, CNN and this website called The Root which is dedicated to Black news and topics. My favorite band is Young the Giant, and if anyone else loves them like I do we can go see them in concert next week! Peep the gif of them below:
