In this tutorial, I will be showing how to make a paint slash effect with Photoshop. Here’s a list of pictures that I used for this tutorial:

Model

Splash

  1. Open the model image.
  2. Use the magic eraser to erase the black background.
  3. Make a new canvas. Here I’m using 1280*720 px for dimensions.
  4. Drag the model picture to the new canvas. Resize the picture however you like.
  5. Open the splash picture, and use magic eraser to erase the white portion.
  6. Drag the splash picture to the canvas we made, and resize it so that it covers at least the model’s face.
  7. Make a new layer and fill it white.
  8. Make sure you selected the new layer painted with whilte. Then ctrl+click (Mac: command+click) the highlighted area, then ctrl+shift+i (Mac: command+shift+i) to inverse select.
  9. Click on the mask icon highlighted below.
  10. Make the splash layer invisible.
  11. Change the image however you like. Here, I’m just making the model image darker.
  12. Make a new layer, and use the brush tool to paint some colors of your choice. Set the effect to screen so that you can see the effect. You can also play around with other effects.
  13. Here, I’m just painting more colors and playing with the camera raw filter. Here is the final product:
