The End of an Era: The Death of Vine

posted in: Uncategorized | 2

A few days ago, Twitter announced that it will be discontinuing Vine, the six-second video-sharing app. It might just be me, but I think these six-second videos jump-started the fascination of videos in digital and social media (not including YouTube). Since 2013, Vine has given us the chance to watch dumb, yet fun, videos on loop. These short videos were able to combine audio and visual effects in humorous ways for our own entertainment while we scroll through our Twitter feeds. But because of the lack of profit and app traffic, it had to be shut down.

I believe that the influence it had on other social media sites lead to its downfall. Facebook began using automatic-playing videos and Instagram (relatively) recently added the ability for people to post videos in addition to pictures. People nowadays don’t have long attention spans, and the use of short videos has been proven successful. For example, on Facebook we all see videos from Tasty or Delish where we can watch a meal being cooked in front of our eyes in a minute or less. Why watch a 30-minute show on Food Network when you can learn a recipe in one minute? These videos gain millions of views in less than a couple of hours, allowing these companies to rake in the money from its views and clicks. Unfortunately, Vine wasn’t able to do the same.

Instead of wallowing in the sadness of Vine being discontinued, I’m going to share some of my favorite vines. Enjoy! (Sorry that they’re really big. To be able to see the whole video on your screen, just click the link of the uploader on the top of the vines when you hover your mouse over the video.)

I love that you posted something about this. I actually had no idea that Vine was being shut down until one of my friends posted on Facebook about it. He wanted to spontaneously spam-post all his favorite Vine videos which I thought it was hilarious.

I was really upset to hear that Vine was shutting down. I really don’t follow many people on vine, in fact, I only ever really watch Thomas Sanders’ vines. If you haven’t seen his vines he has many series such as, “Disney Pranks with Friends” and “Story Time” as well as many others. I really love his vines because he puts a lot of creativity and humor into the short six second videos; I am constantly amazed at the how much content he manages to put into it. I am sad to see Vine go but I guess it just goes to show how competitive social media has gotten. I enjoyed your post and your vines!
